Checklist For Moving
Any kind of change creates stress and relocating represents a huge change. But with this moving checklist you can make it less stressful.
Psychologists say any kind of change will create stress - whether it's positive or negative stress. But relocating to a new home can be less stressful when you know what you need to remember most. Rather than relying on what you think you'll need to do, print out this moving checklist of suggestions and reminders instead. That way you can be proactive, complete important chores AND make your move go more smoothly.
- Don't be a pack rat and get rid of what you don't need by having a garage sale or donating the leftovers to the Salvation Army or other charitable groups.
- Get important papers and documents together in one place (if not already in a safe) and keep them with you (rather than packing them). This includes things like birth and marriage certificates, passports, military or school records, telephone numbers, valuables, vehicle documents and wills to name a few. You might need these things immediately.
- Prepare for living at your new location by contacting the new area utility companies and arrange for your new services, which often include Cable TV, gas, electric, oil, telephone, water and Internet access.
- If you're relocating to an entirely new area be sure to arrange for new medical providers and finding the hours of the DMV to re-register your vehicles.
- Contact your insurance companies concerning ‘location type insurance' like car insurance, homeowner's insurance, etc.
- Go to the post office for a moving kit which includes change of address forms for all of your important monthly contacts that can include the following: credit card companies, loan accounts, banks, insurance companies, current utility companies for final bills, magazine subscriptions, family, friends, and any other people or businesses that you communicate with regularly.
- Buy a notepad so you're not searching for phone numbers in wallets, purses, or address books. Make a list of all the contacts you think you'll need to contact immediately such as: Banks, Doctors, Emergency contacts, Family members, Friends, Movers, Pharmacies, Schools, Storage Facilities and Utilities. The reason is you might not have a phone book or the Internet immediately upon moving in.
With this moving checklist, and the proper moving planning and preparation, you'll find the process can be an exciting time, rather than a stressful one.
